ANNE FRENCH contemporary decoupage
'These pieces of furniture are my latest passion in an on-going experiment of creating something beautiful and useful from something unwanted and thrown away. The chairs and tables are rescued from skips or bought from Charity shops, rid of their former paint and varnish, and re-clothed using hundreds and thousands of pictures, and words, cut from my son's abandoned comics.
The images are re-assembled to make a new story. You may well find Batman falling in love with Thundra, or Judge Dread disagreeing with Spiderman. I never know what the end result will be. I always have a moment when I think '...this is not going to work out', but somehow they do, each one totally unique.
This 'functional art', is finally covered with layers and layers of varnish, which protects and embellishes them'.
Last year the furniture was appreciated during the Brighton Festival: I exhibited my work at The Dog House Open House. And I was thrilled that one of my pieces was chosen for the Regency House House Open Exhibition 2010.
My work can often be seen elsewhere in Brighton: please check my website for details.
